Why Your Door Won’t Lock: Multi-Point Lock Jammed

Break-In Repair in Toronto: How to Secure Your Home Immediately After a Burglary

Walking up to your home and seeing your front door ajar—or the wood frame splintered on the ground—is a stomach-dropping feeling.

A break-in is more than just property damage; it is a violation of your personal space. At In Trust Locksmith & Doors, we understand that your immediate priority isn’t just “fixing a lock”—it’s restoring your peace of mind so you and your family can sleep safely tonight.

If you have just experienced a burglary in Toronto or the GTA, take a deep breath. Here is the step-by-step guide on what to do next, and how we turn a broken door into a fortress that burglars won’t want to touch again.

Step 1: Safety First (Before You Call Us)

If you suspect the intruder is still inside: Do not enter the house. Retreat to a neighbor’s home or your car and call 911 immediately.

If the intruder is gone: Call the Toronto Police non-emergency line (416-808-2222) or your local police division to file a report.

  • Crucial Tip: Do not touch the door handle, the broken wood, or any tools left behind. Do not start cleaning up the glass. The police may need to dust for fingerprints or collect evidence. Wait until they give you the “all clear.”

Step 2: The Emergency Secure-Up

Once the police have finished, your home is likely wide open. You cannot leave it like that overnight.

When you call our 24/7 Line, we treat your call as a priority dispatch. We aim to be at your door anywhere in the GTA within 20-45 minutes.

What we do immediately:

  1. Temporary Boarding: If a window or glass door was smashed, we board it up securely with plywood to prevent weather damage and repeat entry.

  2. Lock Replacement: If your keys were stolen (a common tactic so they can return later), we will re-key or replace your cylinders on the spot.

  3. Frame Stabilization: If the door frame is split but salvageable, we use heavy-duty screws and plates to pull the wood back together, allowing the door to lock securely for the night.

Step 3: Reinforcement

Most break-ins in Toronto occur via a “Kick-In” attack. The burglar kicks the door near the handle. Because most builder-grade homes use short ½-inch screws that only go into the soft pine trim, the strike plate rips right out of the frame.

We don’t just repair this damage; we reinforce it so it can’t happen again.

The “In Trust” Reinforcement Standard:

  • Door Wrap-Around Plates: We install a heavy-gauge metal “sleeve” that wraps around the edge of your door. This covers the unsightly split wood and doubles the strength of the latch area.

  • High-Security Strike Plates: We replace the flimsy standard strike plate with a longer, reinforced steel model.

  • 3-Inch Anchor Screws: This is the secret weapon. We throw away the short screws and drive 3-inch hardened steel screws through the strike plate, past the soft door frame, and directly into the solid 2×4 wall studs of your house structure.

    • Result: To kick the door in now, a burglar would have to break the wall of the house, not just the trim.

Step 4: Upgrade Your Hardware (High-Security Locks)

If a burglar picked your lock or drilled it out (less common but possible), it’s time to upgrade to a High-Security Cylinder.

We recommend brands like Mul-T-Lock or Medeco.

  • Pick-Proof: They have specialized pins that standard tools cannot manipulate.

  • Drill-Resistant: They feature hardened steel inserts that shatter drill bits.

  • Key Control: You get a specialized ID card. No one can duplicate your key at a hardware store without your authorization. This prevents contractors, dog walkers, or previous tenants from making secret copies.

Step 5: Don’t Forget the Sliding Doors

Did they enter through the backyard patio door? Sliding glass doors are notorious weak points. The standard latch is often just a small hook that can be popped open with a screwdriver.

We can install:

  • Charlie Bars: A folding bar that physically blocks the door from sliding.

  • Double-Bolt Locks: A secondary lock installed at the top or bottom of the door that bolts into the frame.

  • Anti-Lift Spacers: These prevent a burglar from lifting the door off its tracks to bypass the lock entirely.
